We had the opportunity to do a blind tasting of flowers from these farms, as well as two more finalists for the 2018 award, plus the six farms that won the Regenerative Cannabis Farm Award in 2016 and 2017. This allowed us to enthusiastically confirm that cannabis grown with regenerative practices is, in fact, the dankest.
Mulberry Goo by Sun Roots Farm is particularly pretty, sticky and sparkly with striking flecks of deep purple and green. The scent is seductively sweet with notes of cheesecake, boysenberry, and chocolate, and the flavor is juicy, floral, tart, and exotic. The effect is harmonious and deeply relaxing; a round, full, heavy stone yet also weightless, like swaying in a hammock enjoying a soft summer breeze.
Velvet Purps by Sun Roots Farm is a strikingly vivid deep dark purple jewel of a flower with trichomes that glisten like soap bubbles. The aroma is floral, earthy, and vegetative with notes of kohlrabi, chocolate, musty grape, and Douglas fir that carry through to the flavor along with a nutty minerality. An airy head high gently energizes and invigorates, accompanied by mild body tingles.
Sour Strawberry by HappyDay Farms has a pleasantly round fuzzy look, with lots of long pistils giving it a muppet vibe. Earthy smells of petrichor and forest floor are followed by cream of mushroom soup, lemon, and sage, which also come through in the flavor, along with a hint of French roast coffee. The tranquil stone slowly builds, deepening the breath and emptying the mind with a grounding stillness that would be ideal for a restorative massage.
Orange Durban by HappyDay Farms is nicely shaped and a bit leafy, with salmon colored pistils and plenty of intact trichomes. The fragrance is a zesty cloud of Irish Spring soap, pine, cedar, lemon, pink pencil eraser, and musky cologne, and that clean lemon pine freshness continues in the smoke. A dazed yet alert head high hits quickly, prompting deep breathing and quiet inward focus.
Blue Kush by Radicle Herbs is bright green and leafy with flashes of purple beneath a thick layer of shimmery silver frost. Its old school aroma offers classic notes of sour citrus, pine, skunk, cheese, and earth, plus a spritz of rose perfume. The flavor is sharp and astringent with magic marker fumes, pine, spearmint, and lime. The uplifting body high and groovy euphoria would be ideal for an evening of snuggly stargazing with a sweetheart.
Magic High by Radicle Herbs has a lovely appearance with a nice layer of oily resin. A bright aromatic blend of lemon-lime cleanser, sour cherry, and tropical pineapple comes with an astringent kick of Sharpie and pine, and similar notes of lemon, lime, and pine come through in the smoke, along with mentholated mint and fragrant botanicals. The effect clears lungs and sinuses and inspires visual mesmerization with a tingly body and fluttery head high.
Grateful Breath Cherry Puff by Dragonfly Earth Medicine is encrusted with an absolutely absurd amount of dazzling trichomes. A sweet cookie dough top note hovers above fragrant forest musk and gingerbread. The scent has a layered complexity but is not overly loud, and the smoke is delectable and sophisticated. The effect is a rare combination of potent, pleasant, mood-enhancing, and muscle-relaxing. Feeling clear as a bell, fully present, and playfully slothlike, we want more even though we're already so high.
Mothership 840 by Dragonfly Earth Medicine has a plush coat of gooey trichomes with a smattering of amber and lots of long pistils emanating from light green calyxes. The aroma brings together a quintessential array of classic notes: lemon, lime, pine, fuel, and just a hint of astringent skunk, while the flavor is mostly sour lemon and gas with a spicy dash of pepper. The effect is a strong silent head stone that pulses with ancient reverberations. Dreamy and visual, it feels like a midnight library full of weird shadows and secrets.
Voltron by Green Source Gardens is blanketed with a thick coat of resin that sparkles like freshly fallen snow. An alluring aroma of cookie dough, red fruit punch, lime, and banana continues into the taste, with flavors of rising sourdough, baking spice, pepper, cacao, and mint. The effect is a staggeringly potent knockout stone. A heavy pulsing weight relentlessly melts your bones until you feel like a buttery pile of mashed potatoes.
Cosmic Fruit by Green Source Gardens is glittering ultraviolet tinged with dark green, with long orange pistils and an elegantly elongated structure. The syrupy sweet smell of pulpy papaya mango juice mingles with a beachy cocktail of spicy lemongrass, toasted coconut, bitter grapefruit rind, and sunscreen. The floaty head high is uplifting, sociable, and alert as it smoothly levels out to a plateau of gentle relaxation, transporting you to a tropical paradise.
Athene Cherry Kush by Moon Gazer Farms is caked with gluey resin. Dried lumber, cranberry chutney, and sweet crispy onions predominate in the aroma and flavor, with hints of berry, muffin, iced tea, hops, and pepper. The effect is a grounding, settling body stone that feels loosening and opening, like a friend pulling you into an assisted stretch, while a loopy fizzy head high turns your focus inward.
Dog Named Tsu by Moon Gazer Farms has a good coating of sparkly resin. Pungent fumes of Sharpie and fuel dominate the aroma and flavor, with notes of minerality, bitter cocoa powder, apricot, and charred lime. The sociable, functional high kicks in quickly with a friendly chatterbox energy and floating bubble helmet sensation.
Blueberry x Afghan Kush by LionPaw Organics is stunning; luscious shapely buds shimmer with patches of silvery purple and vibrant green through a forest of peach pistils. Mouthwatering smells of freshly baked pastries and berry jam waft from the jar, and the taste is equally yummy blueberry sponge cake and bittersweet rose. The soothingly stoney effect is grounded and reflective, as if sitting in silent contemplation on the mossy bank of a flowing stream.
Tangie Afghan Kush by LionPaw Organics is a shimmery purple dappled with bright green and coated with milky white trichomes. The pungent sweetness of overripe oranges melds with layers of sweet potato, floral essence, and cinnamon. Flavors of orange bitters, soft pine, and hops recall a sour beer or classic cocktail. The effect feels like an enveloping wave of softening contentment, relieving aches and pains with a clear floaty all-over stone.
Rose Lemonade by Flowerdaze Farm is a sugar-coated candy-colored burst of terpy trichomes. The aroma is exceptionally juicy citrus, a tropical concoction of tangerine, mango, guava, and passion fruit. The taste is a tart and effervescent blood orange with earthy and floral notes. A soaring head high stimulates the senses with bouncy bubbly energy, evoking the enthusiasm of forbidden cereal and Saturday morning cartoons.
Banana Goo by Flowerdaze Farm has a delicately graceful structure encrusted with gleaming trichome heads and accented with bunches of long muted orange pistils. A tantalizing pineapple upside-down cake aroma tinged with honeysuckle lingers through the dry hit and first puffs before giving way to burnt blueberry pancake and incense spice. The effect feels staid and settling, with a rubbery body stone, mental static, and the slow methodical flowing rhythm of an old man solemnly doing tai chi.
Cuddle Bud by Briceland Forest Farm is a dense little boulder frosted with a dusting of snowy resin. A funky fermented fruit nose anticipates flavors of peach salsa, shisha, and molasses with a peppery kick. The comfortably mellow stone slowly saturates the body and stupefies the mind, feeling like a warm golden beam of late afternoon sunshine.
Cherry Cheesecake by Briceland Forest Farm has nicely dense, tightly structured, attractively shaped flowers. Its unusual smell of stale jalapeño, cucumber melon, peppermint, and river water precedes an understated flavor with similar notes, plus tobacco, mullein, and a hint of lemon. The high is clear, carefree, gently relaxing, and intensely expectorant, with enhanced visual and auditory awareness. It cleanses the senses and rejuvenates the spirit with a feeling of floating away on a puffy white cloud.
Pineapple Rising by Waterdog Herb Farm is a pretty shade of green, densely covered with an abundance of trichome heads. Tart, effervescent, and candy-like, the aroma and flavor are layered with tropical fruit, vanilla, lemon, and rose. The stretchy, melty, rolly-polly body sensation and wavy, cerebral high pair perfectly with a juicy yoga flow.
Gelato by Waterdog Herb Farm is flashy and swole with royal purple flecks and a thick layer of resin. Inviting scents of bread dough, burnt rubber, pie crust, and dank ginger usher in flavors of cherry gas, musty funk, rye bread, Manuka honey, and minty menthol. A heavy grounding body stone takes effect slowly but powerfully, easing tension like sinking into a luxuriously steamy bath.
Jah Pie by Covelo Seed & Scion is super frosty, with purple patches hidden beneath a gooey coating of tacky resin. The aroma and flavor are savory and subtly complex; mint jelly layered with woody parmesan, herbs, lemon, mushroom gravy, and incense spice. The powerful high loosens muscles, mind, and mood. It's goofy, playful, smiley, and snuggly, like a big fluffy dog lolling by a fire while cleansing rain pours down outside.
Weezle by Covelo Seed & Scion has an unassuming appearance: light green, leafy, orange pistils, moderate resin coverage. The aroma, though, is intriguingly exotic, with an unusual umami character and a briny blend of nori, fish sauce, pine, and floral perfume. Notes of fennel, saffron, and mint carry through to the flavor, coalescing into a savory dish of jeweled rice. The effect is centering, restorative, and peaceful, enhancing sensory awareness and meditative mindfulness. Slowly swirling thoughts and a languid loungy body stone conjure a dimly lit existentialist scene where philosophers and poets contemplate esoteric mysteries.
